Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos offers here his first feature film in the language of Shakespeare, a surreal fable absurd humor.
Colin Farrell is David, recently divorced. But in this city of the future, singles are an aberration and can not exist. They are sent to a hotel - sort of nightmarish resort - they have 45 days to find a (an) spouse (e) or they are then transformed into animal of their choice before being released into the wild (I let you appreciate the explanation given by David to justify lobster).
The rules of this anything but romantic stay are clearly explained by the director of the hotel (Olivia Colman, seen in "Broadchurch") - David is the only character with a name, all others are identified either by their function, either by their disabilities - including the formal prohibition to masturbate, the punishment is to be seriously burned hand (right!) in a toaster for breakfast. Once installed, our hero finds himself to get to know many residents. He became a "friendship" with the man who can (Ben Whishaw) and his buddy, the man who lisp (John C. Reilly) before starting a relationship with the woman without heart (Angeliki Papoulia). Because of her, he fled from the hotel to join a group of single resistance led by the chief (LГ©a Seydoux). And that's where it falls on a myopic woman (Rachel Weitz) and both fall madly in love with each other.
No doubt this modern tale in which the actors their lines with a debit monotony is a smart and original allegory about tyranny torque prevailing in our society today. All the scenes of the hotel, with all its attendant activities that most aberrant each other (the dance is memorable, as the conversation with the woman of David biscuits), are among the best of this " lobster "which the second part and the outcome lack a little punch.
Winner of the Jury Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival, "The Lobster" remains, despite its flaws, a movie to watch.
