Increased surveillance on the roads

The Surete of Quebec has increased its monitoring on the roads of the Three Rivers region as part of Operation Defensive Shield to remind motorists that the rules of road safety apply ... even in good weather!

Spring slowly brings good weather and with it also comes the taste for many motorists to drive a little faster, according to Lt. Stéphane Mailhot of the Surete of Quebec Nicolet.

"With the snow melts, it is more conducive to excess. We want to set the tone for the summer season, "he said.

The Sûreté du Québec therefore conducts its Operation Defensive Shield to remember the rules of road safety, starting with respect for speed limits.

More particularly monitors speeding because they are too often the cause of accidents.

"It is by our actions that we have a positive impact on road safety record. That the downward influence "added Lt. Mailhot.

The police obviously used their radar to monitor the speed of vehicles, but they also looked at the use of seat belts and the use of mobile devices, both important factors in injury crashes.

The operation also aims to reduce the number of fatal crashes.

There were 88 in Quebec between April 2015 and March 2016, that is 20 more than in the same period the previous year.

Another objective of Operation Defensive Shield is to reverse this increase and bring down.

"The operation is held to improve road safety by acting on the main causes of collisions," said Stéphane Mailhot.
